Captains log...star date 2013...

NZTC

Captains Log –

For all Nerdymen and nerds alike,
I would love to share with you our road to glory, path to victory and us coming out of the flames like a phoenix reborn - reaping a blazing path of destruction upon our enemies. Unfortunately, this weekend we were beaten by a most formidable opponent. Congratulations to the Dunn Family and Joe Dixon.
On a more positive note The League of Extraordinary Nerdymen finished 2nd in the first (hopefully annual) New Zealand Team Champions.
“Raarraaaaaahhhhh!!!!” – Primal Battle Cry of a Bloody Victory
Special mention goes to NZ Hammered for 3rd place, the Australian team that came over and all of our opponents.

The beginning.
It was announced at least 6 months ago that the NZTC was to be held in Wellington.  My faithful Champion and Vampire Lord ‘Rory F.’ signed us up and the planning began.  All Nerdymen are fiercely proud to fly the banner of The League so to turn up as representatives came with the weight of high expectations from a large extended group of friends sitting back in Auckland and across the globe as far as the UK and Serbia. They weren’t demanding first place but wanted a result to be proud of. So it became my personal goal to squeeze every bit of skill and potential out of the resources I had available to me in the Nerdman crew.

Our lists can be found elsewhere but we took
Vampires  ‘Rory Finnemore’
Basic Strategy put him in front something that can’t control the bus and watch Rory do the happy-clappy dance.
Daemons ‘Paul Clarke’
Basic Strategy “Sorry Paul, under the bus please and hold on to whatever points you can”
High Elves ‘Graeme Fry’
Basic Strategy N/A
Advanced Strategy. Where do you start with High elves?? What Graeme and I came up with was a list that looked like a juicy target in the match up process, but would ultimately punish you for sitting back and alternately providing a wall of white lions should you wish to engage. Graeme was our out-of-the-box list and this Veteran Prince of Ulthuan showed his claim as the NZ Phoenix King over the weekend!
Ogres ‘Thomas van Roekel’
Basic Strategy get myself in against whatever Red match up everyone else had and ‘Take it off’!

First up, thank you to Pete Dunn, Locky Reid and Ryan Lister for the organisation, planning and hosting over the weekend. Everyone appreciates the hard work. Cheers!
On to the good stuff –
Forgive me for not adding in everyone’s names in this. If we played you, you know who you are and the Nerdymen all said they had fantastic games against everyone so I can only assume you are the sort of people that won’t get offended.

Round One ‘Omen’ –
Riding high on emotions the Nerdymen were all gunning to get started. And the Omen boys provided us with an epic first round clash that was hard fought on every table. We got in most part all the match ups we wanted so were set to really try pull some point out of this one.
Graeme vs Dark elves – 4-16 loss
Rory vs Vampires – 16-4 win
Paul vsHighelves – 7-14 loss
Thomas vs Empire – 18-2 win
A couple of the boys got stung in this one. We were after a couple more points out of the games we lost.  But credit to Omen the Nerdymen were happy to come away with a small win in the round.

Round Two ‘Shaken Not Stirred’ –
These boys presented with a list line up that we were not happy about. No one wanted to play Chaos Dwarfs and most of us said no thank you to the Orcs as well. Thankfully Paul stepped up and went ‘under the bus’ Cheers Paul and my Prince of Ulthuan commanded the game in a Historic clash against the Orcs.
Paul vs Chaos Dwarfs – 1-19 loss
Graeme vs Orcs – 11-9 win
Rory vs Lizardmen – 14-6 win
Thomas vs Empire – 19-1 win
Everything roughly went as expected, small win to the Nerdymen.

Round Three ‘Over the Hill’ –
Again credit where credit is due. After the match up process I really thought we had these guys numbers - but things went south.
Paul vs High Elves – 1-19 loss
Graeme vs Dwarfs – 7-13 loss
Rory vs Warriors – 5-15 loss
Thomas vs Skaven – 17-3 win
We were confident about this one and I’m ashamed as captain that I don’t have an answer. We were beaten. Congratulation to Over the Hill on this one – a well earned victory.

Round 4 ‘Cut the Mustard’ -
After rolling a couple of D6 the boys passed their rally tests and then fired up for round 4. It was a long day and coming up to my bed time by the time this game started. We knew we needed a big win here and we couldn’t afford to drop away from the leaders any more than were already had. I got the matches I wanted (sort of) and the Victory orders were given “Point lads, Points or you won’t see the podium no excuses”
Paul vs Ogres – 6-14 loss
Graeme vs Daemons – 19-1 win (the sundering V1.0)
Rory vs Woodelves – 17-3 win
Thomas vs Vampires – 20-0 win
The Nerdymen responded in turn providing a crushing victory capping us out at 60/20. I really enjoyed my game and had a fantastic Ogre tactics chat with their ogre general after. Cheers to Cut the Mustard.

Round 5 ‘NZ Hammered’ –
These guys were our closest friends and biggest rivals going down to Wellington. After spending Friday night out getting up to no good with these lads, there was Smack talk aplenty during this round. We both knew it would happen, may the best gamers win!
Rory vs Warriors – 14-6 win
Graeme vs Bretonnians – 10-10 draw
Paul vsLizardmen – 13-7win
Thomas vs Ogres – 14-6 win
The League stepped up here! This was a better result than I could have hoped for, cheers to NZ Hammered but the Nerdymen will remember this one and the bragging rights until we clash again next year. Across the board the Nerdymen’s favourite round.

Round 6 ‘Grumpy Old Men’ –
Veterans of the NZ community and in Podium contention the guys were the Nerdymen’s last hurdle to jump to come home with some silver wear. A good result here and we were in, so the rally cry went out again “Point lads, Points or you won’t see the podium no excuses”. It was time to step up or go home with our tails between our legs.
Graeme vs Daemons – 14-6 win (the Sundering V2.0)
Paul vs Dark Elves – 2-18 loss
Rory vs Lizardmen – 17-3 win
Thomas vs Dwarfs 19-1 win
The match ups were tight and I hadn’t lined up what I wanted. In stunned belief as Captain – My Boys gave last huge effort, as the results came in we looked at each other asking ourselves “Have we done enough? Will we be close?” Fantastic games across the board – cheers Grumpy Old Men.

The League came away with Second, dodging the Von Traps who claimed tile.
Or from my prospective -
“Vonn Traps, You dodged us!!”
So to all the Nerdymen and nerds alike this was the best tournament I’ve ever played in.
There is nothing like battling for glory with your closest mates.
Thank you everyone involved.

“May your Children’s, Children roll 6’s” (Except for Miscasts and Leadership Tests)

From a Fiercely Proud Nerdyman Captain,

  1. Great seeing you guys play, too bad we didn't play you guys either (Krushers). Rory does get excited.

I got a 19-1 loss to Chaos dwarfs as well.

    1. Ha ha yes I do get get excited! But like the TAB say "It's always better when you've got something on it"! And after all the smack talk between us and NZ Hammered a lot was on it!
Probably my favourite piece of sledging came from Kitson who during our debauched Friday night produced some tissue paper from some seedy place that we visited. He said it for me to dry my tears after I was crushed....he kept bringing out that same piece of fucking tissue paper during game intervals, waving it in my face and ginning evilly! Fucking classic! Wish I took a photo!

  3. Well done guys, you got up on us and it was a classic round. I was hoping Ant/JW would pick up more points in their games as Glenn took the vamps and myself the mirror match. You did bail us out round 6 by smashing the Grumpy old men and allowing us to leap frog them with a big 60 into 3rd! In the end the Dunn’s did dodge you they didn’t fancy playing another Auckland team after we had gotten 50 points out of them round two!

  4. Loved the dance you did when James M was giving your VC's butts a good ass kicking, the shaking of the ass was just awesome Rory.

Well done on getting podium placing, well deserved.

    F****** Aucklanders!
